A Field Guide to the Bodhisattvas: with Myoshin Kate McCandless

  • Mountain Rain Zendo 2016 Wall Street Vancouver, BC, V5L 1J5 Canada (map)

We chant the names of bodhisattvas—Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Samantabhadra—in our services and in our meal chant, but they often remain remote and mysterious in our minds. In this dharma seminar we will become better acquainted with the “big three” (plus Jizo bodhisattva, beloved in Japan as protector of women, children and travellers, and another one or two surprise bodhisattvas) through iconography, koans and folklore that express the archetypal qualities of the “enlightened being” who vows to awaken for the benefit of all beings. We will explore how these bodhisattva archetypes can support us to actualize our bodhisattva vows in our daily lives.

Dharma seminar sessions will consist of two zazen periods, an informal talk, writing reflections (bring a notebook), small/large group discussion, followed by tea and snacks in the kitchen. Everyone welcome!  By donation.
