Practice Period Opening Weekend Retreat: The upaya (skillful means) of Vimalakirti

Please join us for this non-residential silent retreat which opens Mountain Rain's 21st annual 8-week practice period, led by guiding teachers Myoshin Kate McCandless and Shinmon Michael Newton . The retreat will be offered in-person at the Mountain Rain zendo with appropriate safety protocols, and concurrent online Zoom access. Zoom link below.

Our theme this year is “ The wisdom of Vimalakirti “. Vimalakirti was a legendary enlightened layman who is said to have lived at the time of the Buddha. The Vimalakirti Sutra expresses his teachings about the bodhisattva path in lively discussions with a host of characters. Please see the 2022 Practice Period Guide and registration for details about practice period.

Details on the practice period theme this year will be forthcoming . This retreat will introduce the theme and launch the practice period. On Friday evening participants will be invited to state their intentions for the practice period.

This retreat is open to beginners and experienced practitioners. It will include zazen (sitting meditation), kinhin (walking meditation), dharma talks by the teachers, and dokusan (individual meetings with the teachers). 

Friday  7:00-9:00  The evening will close with a ceremony to open the practice period. Each participant will be invited to share their intentions for the practice period. Everyone welcome!

4:15-5:00 jukai ceremony for Kuya Minogue. Kuya, from Sakuraji in Creston, BC, will be joining our Suzuki Shunryu lineage, after receiving lay and priest ordination previously in different Soto Zen lineages. The ceremony will be live at Wall St. with Kuya joining via Zoom. Everyone welcome live or Zoom.

Participants please bring your lunch both days. Dinner will be served Saturday evening.

Dana (donations to the teachers)

Retreat fees cover expenses and do not go to the teachers. There will be an opportunity to give a donation/dana to the teachers at the retreat.

Below are four fee options. Please read them first, then scroll down further and make your selecion. You will then be given an online form for more information before payment.

1. Supporting fee ($110): supports our capacity to offer reduced fees for those in limited income.

2. Basic fee ($90): full-time attendance.

3. Saturday fee ($50) Saturday only attendance, including Saturday dinner, or for reduced fee full-time attendance.

3. Sunday fee (40) Sunday only attendance.

Friday evening attendance is open to anyone who has registered.
