Not Elevating the Self, Not Disparaging Others

Not elevating oneself and blaming others: buddhas and patriarchs realized the absolute emptiness and realized the great earth. When the great body is manifested, there is neither outside nor inside in the emptiness.
— Eihei Dogen Zenji -- 13th cen.

The sixth and seventh of the grave bodhisattva precepts deal with our persistent habit patterns of judging and comparing self and other. Inflating or deflating ourselves, disparaging those we look down on, flattering those we look up to…

Kate will share some reflections and the story of the Bodhisattva Never-Despising, followed by small group talking circles.

Myoshin Kate McCandless is co-guiding teacher of Mountain Rain Zen Community.

Dharma seminar sessions consist of two zazen periods, an informal talk, sometimes writing reflections (bring a notebook), small/large group talking circles. Part of our regular Wednesday evening practice schedule. Everyone welcome!  By donation.
