What's Love Got to Do with Zen? dharma seminar

  • Mountain Rain Zen Community 2016 Wall Street Vancouver, B.C. Canada (map)
Love and respect your body, mind and self that are engaged in this continuous practice.
— Dogen Zenji, in "Continuous Practice"

You won’t find many references to love in Zen koans or in Dogen’s writings, and yet what is the bodhisattva path, if not motivated by love? What is love, anyway? Has the word become so debased in popular culture that we hardly dare use it?

In this dharma seminar we will inquire into those questions and more. We’ll consider different kinds of love, practices that expand our capacity to love, and Buddhist teachings on love.

No required reading, but here are some books you might want to check out:

Teachings on Love by Thich Nhat Hanh

All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks, also her Salvation: Black People and Love, and The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity and Love.

Perfect Love, Imperfect Relationships: Healing the Wound of the Heart by John Welwood

Dharma seminar sessions consist of two zazen periods, an informal talk, sometimes writing reflections (bring a notebook), small/large group talking circles. Part of our regular Wednesday evening practice schedule. Everyone welcome!  By donation.
