The Life and Teachings of "Homeless" Kodo Sawaki

  • Mountain Rain Zen Community 2016 Wall Street Vancouver, B.C. Canada (map)

Kodo Sawaki Roshi (1880-1965), known as Homeless Kodo, was one of the most influential Soto Zen teachers of the twentieth century. He extended the teachings widely to lay people and was instrumental in reviving the practice of hand-sewing the okesa (priest’s robe). He was the teacher of Kosho Uchiyama Roshi, whose book Opening the Hand of Thought, has become much appreciated among western Zen practitioners. And Uchiyama Roshi was the teacher of Shohaku Okumura Roshi, Kate and Michael’s first Soto Zen teacher in Japan, who had become well-known for his invaluable work translating and interpreting Dogen.

In this dharma seminar we will learn about Homeless Kodo’s life and explore how his teachings are relevant to our practice in the world today.

Dharma seminar sessions consist of two zazen periods, an informal talk, sometimes writing reflections (bring a notebook), small/large group talking circles. Part of our regular Wednesday evening practice schedule. Everyone welcome!  By donation.
