Restoring Connection: self, community, world

  • Mountain Rain Zen Community 2016 Wall Street Vancouver, B.C. Canada (map)
Let everything to happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
— Rainer Maria Rilke, translated by Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy

Please join in community for a day of encouragement and empowerment, based on the work of Joanna Macy, who for over fifty years has been writing, teaching and acting for peace and justice in the world. From the beginning her work has been deeply rooted in the dharma, the teachings and practices of the Buddha, and also in systems theory. She has been a pioneer in socially engaged Buddhism. She oritinally called the practices she develped “despair and empowerment work,”, but in more recent years has she has used “the work that reconnects.” After two years of pandemic isolation and caution, many of us are still finding reconnecting challenging.

In this workshop-style retreat we will share experiential practices from the four “stations” on Macy’s spiral of the work that reconnects: Coming from Gratitude, Honouring our Pain, Seeing with New Eyes, and Going Forth. LIke so many “stage” models, these are aspects of our experience through we spiral again and again, deepening and integrating our understanding. Macy’s practices help to generate what she calls “active hope.”

Myoshin Kate McCandless , co-guiding teacher of MRZC, has been studying Joanna Macy’s work for two decades, and has participated in and co-facilitated a number of workshops based on her work.

This retreat will be offered in-person only at the Wall St. zendo, to enable hands-on experiential exercises, and facilitate building a community of support and trust. If there is enough interest in a Zoom-only version this could be scheduled separately, and adapted for Zoom. Please contact teachers@mountainrainzen.org if you are interested in a Zoom session.
