Practices of a Bodhisattva: a weekend retreat with Myoshin Kate McCandless

  • Mountain Rain Zendo 2016 Wall Street Vancouver, BC, V5L 1J5 Canada (map)

To free beings without limit, give rise to awakening mind—

this is the practice of a bodhisattva.

Tokme Zongpo’s Thirty-seven Practices of a Bodhisattva

The Tibetan lama Tokme Zongpo was a 13th century contemporary of Dogen Zenji. In this retreat we will explore the practices offered in his thirty-seven verses, particularly the compassion practice of tonglen, taking and sending.

The retreat will include periods of zazen (sitting meditation), kinhin (walking meditation), dharma talks each day, and dokusan, individual meetings with the teacher.

Meals will be included and will be served in traditional oryoki (monk’s three bowls) style. Oryoki instructions will be provided.

Everyone welcome, whether you are new to Zen practice or experienced.

Myoshin Kate McCandless is a Zen Buddhist priest and resident teacher of Mountain Rain Zen Community. She has practiced tonglen with Tibetan Buddhist teachers Michael Conklin and B. Alan Wallace.

Schedule:   Saturday:  9:00 AM - 9: PM     Sunday  6:00 AM - 4:00 PM                       Sunday afternoon will be a jukai (receiving the bodhisattva precepts) ceremony for several sangha members.  Sunday lunch will be open to all, and not oryoki style.
