Practice Period Opening Weekend Retreat

Please join us for this non-residential silent retreat which opens Mountain Rain's 17th annual 6-week practice period, led by resident teachers Myoshin Kate McCandless and Shinmon Michael Newton, with shuso Jakushin Todd Slobogean. The practice period theme will be koans from the Mumonkan, The Gateless  Barrier. (Full practice period details,schedule and registration will be posted soon.) 

The retreat is open to beginners and experienced practitioners. It will include zazen (sitting meditation), kinhin (walking meditation), dharma talks by the teachers, a Way-Seeking Mind talk by the shuso, and dokusan (individual meetings with the teachers). 

Friday  7:00-9:00  The evening will close with a ceremony to invite Todd to be shuso (head monk, or practice leader) for the practice period, and to open the practice period. Each participant will be invited to share their intentions for the practice period. Everyone welcome!

Saturday 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM     

Sunday 9:00 - 4:00

Talks open to all:

Saturday and Sunday dharma talks are open to those who are not participating in the retreat. Please arrive during kinhin at 10:10. You may stay through noon service is you wish. By donation/dana.

The shuso's Way-Seeking Mind talk on Saturday afternoon is also open. Please arrive during kinhin at 2:40. 

Participants please bring your lunch both days. Dinner will be served on Saturday. 

Registration Details

Fee

  • Full-time attendance: $90
  • Half-time attendance: $45
  • For those on a limited income, reduced fees are available. Please do not use the registration button below.  Instead, please complete the Weekend Retreat Reduced Fee Request form (click the link to access the form). The registrar will contact you to confirm your registration, and you will pay your fee at the retreat. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. 

Dana (donations to the teachers)

Retreat fees cover expenses and do not go to the teachers. There will be an opportunity to give a donation/dana to the teachers at the retreat.
