10,000 Joys, 10,000 Sorrows: Caring for those approaching end-of-life

  • Mountain Rain Zendo 2016 Wall Street Vancouver, BC, V5L 1J5 Canada (map)

According to Buddhist legend, sickness, old age and death were the three messengers that set young Siddhartha on the path to learn how to live in this world of great suffering. We are urged to contemplate impermanence, but that does not mean we are prepared for the challenges or the joys of caring for someone we love as they near the end of their life, or face an extended period of chronic illness or disability. In this retreat we will share practices that support the resilience we need to stay present, open and self-aware as caregivers.

This is not a formal Zen retreat. It will include gentle stretching, sitting meditation, writing, small and large group discussion, and experiential exercises in a safe and supportive environment. Buddhist teachings and practices are presented in a non-sectarian and accessible format.

Everyone is welcome. No previous experience of meditation or Buddhism necessary. Plenty of chairs, meditation benches and cushions available.

Please bring a bag/box lunch. Herbal tea will be provided. Please note that the start-time has been changed from 9:00 to 10:00.

Myoshin Kate McCandless is a Zen priest and Guiding Teacher of the Mountain Rain Zen Community. As a registered clinical counsellor, she worked in the hospice field for many years as a bereavement counsellor, program coordinator, and volunteer trainer.
