A study retreat with Shinmon Michael Newton
Topic: Dogen Zenji, the founder of Soto Zen in Japan, wrote a short text on Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, which imparts his understanding of compassion as a path beyond self and other. This text shows us how cultivating deep compassion is liberating, leading to a profound sense of immediacy and wholeness. As Dogen teaches, when the great heart of compassion is born in us, we freely open our hands and eyes and respond to the cries of the world.
What is a study retreat? A study retreat is an opportunity to focus on a Zen text intensively—in community, and to apply Dogen’s words to our zazen practice and everyday lives. This retreat will include periods of zazen (sitting meditation), kinhin (walking meditation), two dharma talks each day, small and large group discussion, and reflective writing or art. Please join us!
