Anger, fear, grief, despair, envy, shame: They’ve been called the dark emotions, the afflictive emotions, the negative or destructive emotions, but what they have in common is that we don’t want them. They’re unpleasant and painful. We want them to go away. Each of these emotions, at best, serves an adaptive purpose, and at worst, can be severely debilitating. And each contains a kernel of transformative wisdom, if we can bring mindful, compassionate awareness to our experience.
In this class we’ll explore how our meditation practice can support a wholesome relationship with the dark side of our emotional life.
Two zazen periods, followed by class, including teacher's talk, small and large group discussion and writing exercises.
