What is Zen? a dharma seminar with Myoshin Kate McCandless and Shinmon Michael Newton
When "zen" is used to describe everything from nail salons to computer programs how can we articulate what Zen is? A meditation practice? A philosophy? A religion? What are the key components that make Zen practice what it is? What's the difference between Rinzai and Soto Zen? And have you even heard of Obaku Zen? Those are the Japanese schools. Then there's Chinese Chan, Korean Seon and Vietnamese Thien. And Zen in the West, changing and being changed by this culture.
This 4-week dharma seminar will be a warm-up for our upcoming practice period. (See Practice Period Guide) We'll look at Zen through the lenses of history, practice, teachings, and cultural adaptation. Everyone welcome--newcomers, long-time practitioners, and in-between! Bring your questions and musings.
Each session will include two zazen periods, a talk by one of the teachers and time for Q&A and discussion. Informal snacks and tea to follow.
By donation.
