The most intensive sesshin (retreat) of the year in Zen monasteries is the December Rohatsu sesshin, in honour of Buddha’s enlightenment. Monks are encouraged to sit through the last night of sesshin, embodying the Buddha’s determination to stay in meditation beneath the bodhi tree until he understood the true nature of existence.
Because we hold our yearly Loon Lake sesshin in November, at Mountain Rain we typically have a 27-hour rohatsu intensive in December. This year because of the Covid restrictions we will offer yaza (night sitting) from 9:00 PM to 8::00 AM Sunday morning. followed by a Sunday half-day retreat 9:00-12:15., ending in the traditional the rohatsu ceremony to celebrate the Buddha’s enlightenment.
Yaza will be an open schedule, with no timing bells. you are welcome to attend for any length of time and to meditate in any of the four noble postures, sitting standing walking or lying down. You may also do bowing practice. At midnight we will have a “tea break” and greetings.
Offered on Zoom.
