Beginnings, Endings, Betwixt-and-Betweens: The Perfection of Not Knowing

  • MRZC practice house 5505 Sherbrooke Street Vancouver, BC, V5W 3M7 Canada (map)

While all things bear the mark of impermanence, there is one constant: the constant unknowns.

Closings and openings. “Beginnings” and “Endings.” So many changes and chapters in each life. A birth, a death, a coming-of-age ceremony, a wedding, a divorce, a first weeklong silent retreat, receiving bodhisattva precepts, the start or the end of a friendship, moving to another country, losing a job, retirement…

In these passages from “before” to “after” there’s a betwixt-and-between – a liminal period – which is a time of Not Knowing. It is this very mind state of ‘Not Knowing’ that’s called for in shaping original, creative work.

In our workshop we will explore, individually and together, the nature of liminality and The Perfection - and usefulness - of Not Knowing. Practicing putting one sentence after another is a good way of training oneself to put one foot after the next.

Come write and explore the creative process with us, Jaune Evans and Irene Borger.

We are lifelong writers and artists, close friends, longtime spiritual practitioners and dharma sisters in the lineage of Everyday Zen. All are welcome.

Jaune Evans a writer, photographer, Soto Zen priest and transmitted teacher with Everyday Zen and the Heart of Compassion Zen Sangha. Her experience of community service, compassion and creativity - the Bodhisattva Way - is the ongoing inspiration for Zen practice and teaching.
